  1. I had intense counselling where i learnt to breathe slower by sipping on a drink through a straw. I read alot of anxiety books that real people like us have suffered. Then, i helped myself but, it sounds like you may have post traumatic stress disorder so you may need to find a counsellor. Good luck. Dont give up.

  2. Well I have a similar problem and have been fighting it for YEARS. I actually have PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and have tried *unsuccessfully to try and cure it w/out using any drugs. I am now on “depakote” for it which is a mood stabilizer. But as far as not using ANY drugs.. well Im not sure. You can try going to a therapist once a week. It really DOES help to talk to someone! A LOT of people have misconceptions of therapists though and the trick is to find a therapist that you can RELATE to. Dont just go to any therapist… remember its YOUR choice who you see and if you dont like the first person you see then CHANGE until you find someone you CAN open up to and talk to! For me personallly I have to have a therapist that I can see as a “friend” almost. You know, someone that is around my age, has the same sense of humor as me and who isnt “clinical”. I need someone who I could see being friends with OUTSIDE of therapy (even though that isnt something that would happen.. its just good to FEEL that you could be friends w/ your therapist). Another thing that you could try is getting something like Xanex or Lorazepam (low dose.. like .25mgs) for times when you are having anxiety attacks. That way you have something on hand if you feel like you really NEED it but its not something that you have to take on a daily basis!! Hope that helps!

  3. Try relaxing naturally by exercising regularly. Try activities like yoga or a regular evening walk (take the wife!). Also eating right and getting enough sleep will help. It’s amazing how good a person can feel if he/she just takes care of his/herself!

  4. It sounds more like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), with accompanying anxiety attacks.

You’ve already identified the most important (and many times, the most difficult) factor and that is the traumatic event that is causing your symptoms.

I use aroma therapy to help relax me in the evening and I also use Beta Wave Therapy to help me with deep sleep. I also use a product called Natural Calm, which is a magnesium supplement that my chiropractor (along with the advice of my physician) recommended. Magnesium is a natural sedative and also helps with Restless Leg Syndrome and joint pain. I also make sure to intake plenty of fluids and I use mediation as well when I’m able.

I know most people don’t like the idea of counseling, but I highly recommend it, especially if you’re wanting to treat your symptoms in a drug-free manner. Deep breathing exercises are also very helpful and recognizing the stressors that bring about your attacks is essential.

Good luck to you and believe me, there is relief to be found and healing from the trauma, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually… it just takes time and it sounds like you’re already well on the road to recovery.

    Peace,

    Beki

  5. You have to learn how to decompress and remove stress from your life. Try the gym, yoga or sme form of exercise to release the stress

  6. If it is anxiety, relaxing doesn’t always do the trick. I have found that 30-40 minutes of vigorus cardio is what does the trick for me. Then you have the ability to relax; I too am not a fan of the drugs! You do however need to learn how to relax when you are not in a position to exercise. You need to really pay attention to your breathing pattern. Take a breath hold it for five seconds and release slowly, do this ten times. Also, you need to repeat in your mind that this is only an anxiety attack and this too shall pass. It is important to watch you caffine intake as this will contribute to more frequent anxiety attacks, alchohal consumption is another contributer. Also, being sure that you are getting adequet enough sleep, hense I noticed you said you are suffering from insomnia. That is why I suggested the cardio. It is a condition that is manageable, I have had it for several years. In fact now I when I get them I know what they are and I am at a point where I can almost ingnore them. I just tell my mind to knock it off! I know is sounds a little ridicoulus but it works for me.

  7. Sorry to hear about your traumatic experience and subsequent anxiety problem.

Everybody is different, so what worked for me may not work for you.

I found that daily exercise helps some.

Meditation made a bigger difference, but it takes a long while to be effective.

Both require discipline and a sustained investment of time.
I exercise at least an hour a day, and try to meditate for an hour as well.

Lately I’ve been using a meditation aid CD from http://www.perfectMeditation.com, that has really helped to calm me down. I have no connection with the company other than as a happy customer. You can get the CDs cheaper on Ebay.

I hope that you find a path to peace that works for you.

  8. Meditation, yoga, swimming, eliminate caffeine from your diet. As far as the insomnia, try to eliminate all light and sound from your bedroom, put up blackout curtains and even turn your alarm clock around so that you can’t see the light from it (trust me on that one!). Stretching, like yoga, is really one of the best things that you can do.

  9. Probably you need to cure your Insomnia first… Get some good nite sleep then you will have good rest of your mind.
